Ghost Division

The Defensive Battle of Kyiv

Germany · Historical unit: 7th Panzer Division

The 7th Panzer Division, nicknamed the 'Ghost Division' because of how fast it appeared and vanished on the battlefield, was commanded by Erwin Rommel in the 1940 France campaign. Its lightning advance made it legendary across Europe.

During Operation Barbarossa, the division fought the Battle of Alytus, where it repelled more than 200 Soviet tanks of the 5th Armored Division and opened the path to Vilnius, then Moscow.

On October 2, 1941, during the final phase of Barbarossa, the Ghost Division broke through Soviet western defenses and contributed to the encirclement at Vyazma alongside the 10th Panzer Division.
